Sam Schmidt is a former race car driver and current team owner in the IndyCar Series. He was born on August 5, 1964, in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA. Schmidt began his racing career in the 1980s and had success in various open-wheel racing series, including the Indy Lights and IndyCar Series.

Schmidt is perhaps best known for his role as a team owner in the IndyCar Series. In 2001, he founded Sam Schmidt Motorsports, which became one of the most successful teams in the Indy Lights series. The team won seven championships between 2004 and 2011, with drivers such as J.R. Hildebrand, Josef Newgarden, and Tristan Vautier.

In 2013, Sam Schmidt Motorsports merged with another team to form Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. The team has since become one of the top teams in the IndyCar Series, with multiple wins and championship contenders. Schmidt has also been a pioneer in the use of technology to help people with disabilities, having founded the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation to help those affected by spinal cord injuries.

Schmidt himself suffered a spinal cord injury in a testing accident at Walt Disney World Speedway in 2000, which left him paralyzed from the neck down. However, he has continued to be involved in racing and has become an advocate for people with disabilities. He has even developed a system that allows him to drive a car using only his head movements, known as the SAM (Semi-Autonomous Motorcar) project. Overall, Sam Schmidt is a racing legend and a true inspiration to many in the motorsports community and beyond.

Conquer Paralysis Now (CPN) is a leading authority on spinal cord injury (SCI) research and treatment. We are backed by an international coalition of medical doctors, research scientists and business leaders who share a singular goal: Finding a cure for paralysis.

CPN started in 2000 as the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation. The founder’s original intent was to fund research and provide advocacy and programming for SCI patients and their families. Though SSPF achieved many successes over the next decade, the ultimate goal remained elusive: a cure.

Achieving functional recovery from chronic SCI will be a historic milestone in the advancement of human knowledge and empowerment. The dramatic moment when an individual previously diagnosed with irreversible paralysis takes his or her first steps will be celebrated around the world. It will be a testament to humanity’s progress in the mastery of science and nature.

We want to find a cure. We believe a cure is possible.
