Google Ends Support for Early Nest Thermostats
Google Ends Support for Early Nest Thermostats
Google has quietly discontinued first- and second-generation Nest Thermostats, removing
them from the Nest and Google Home apps as of October 25. Devices released in 2011 and
2012 will lose remote connectivity, notifications, and app-based controls, effectively turning
them into basic, manually operated thermostats.
This move also disables third-party assistant integration and cloud-based features like multi-
device Eco mode and Nest Protect connectivity. While the thermostats themselves continue to
function locally, their smart features are no longer accessible.
Affected users were notified via email and offered a discount on the fourth-generation Nest
Learning Thermostat—$149.99, nearly half the regular $279.99 price.
The decision highlights the challenges of long-term support for IoT devices and serves as a
reminder for early adopters: any internet-connected device may eventually lose cloud
functionality, even if the hardware continues to work.
