T-Commerce: How Your Couch Is Becoming the Next Checkout Lane

T-Commerce: How Your Couch Is Becoming the Next Checkout Lane

Shopping while watching TV isn’t exactly new—HSN and QVC pioneered the concept back in
the ’80s. But today’s version of couch commerce looks very different. Thanks to connected TVs
(CTVs), streaming platforms, and interactive ads, the next frontier in media may just be t-
commerce—television commerce.

A recent Parks Associates report, Interactive & Shoppable TV, found that 8% of consumers
purchased a physical product through a connected TV platform in the past month. That’s still
modest compared to those subscribing to video services (24%) or buying movies (15%), but it
points to a growing trend: viewers are starting to engage with TV content in ways that go beyond
watching.

Interactive ads—think clickable overlays, QR codes, or opt-in forms during YouTube TV
commercials—are reshaping what it means to advertise on television. These aren’t your old-
school, passive 30-second spots. They’re built for engagement.

The report also showed that 52% of consumers would likely take interactive actions via their
CTV, from ordering food to learning more about items seen in shows or ads. And for sports
fans—43% of internet-enabled U.S. households—interest in live betting through streaming
platforms is on the rise.

As Jennifer Kent of Parks Associates put it, the key to unlocking t-commerce’s potential lies in
long-term, scalable strategies: integrating data, improving interactivity, and rethinking
workflows.

With the right tools, brands can turn a passive viewer into an active customer—all from the
comfort of their couch. T-commerce might still be in its early days, but the future is clearly
clickable.
